A quick check you can run today: open Admin Insights or the server’s traffic views and count the workbooks with zero views in the last 90 days. If that number is hard to pull, the audit produces it on the first day, with nothing to prepare beforehand.
The price follows the size of the job, and you can count most of the variables today:
A single-site audit with a few hundred workbooks sits at the low end. A multi-site Server estate heading to Cloud needs more interviews and a wave-by-wave plan, so the estimate grows with it.
The low-commitment start is the fixed-scope audit. Its price is agreed up front, and the report stays yours whether or not you continue. Send your workbook count, site count and main pain point through the contact form, and the estimate comes back as a range for your setup. Without those counts, a 30-minute call is enough to gather them.
For most single-site setups, the roadmap lands within 14 days of kickoff. Larger estates, or an audit followed by a full Server-to-Cloud plan, take four to eight weeks.
Interim findings arrive along the way. A serious risk, such as an unsupported Server version or a failing extract, reaches you the week it’s found.

Timing usually comes down to two things: how long your Server version stays supported, and how much admin time upgrades take.
Each Tableau Server version gets 24 months of full support and 12 months of limited support. Version 2025.1, for example, leaves full support on March 19, 2027. Tableau lists every date on its support lifecycle page.

Check your version today under Help > About Tableau Server and compare it with the lifecycle dates. If the version is hard to find, the audit records it in the first hour, along with every dependency a move would touch.
Tableau Next pays off when your metrics are already trusted. Its AI agents answer questions from the definitions you give them. A messy metric produces a confident wrong answer.
Three things need to be in place:
Tableau Pulse is the lighter first step. Pulse comes with every Tableau Cloud edition and sends metric updates by email or Slack.
For a quick check, list your five most-watched metrics and see whether each has exactly one definition across dashboards. If two dashboards disagree, fix the definitions first. If you can’t tell yet, the readiness review compares them for you and names one pilot use case with clear success criteria.
Load time usually hides in one of four places:
Tableau’s Performance Recording shows which one applies. Turn it on, open the slowest workbook and see where the time goes. Long query execution points to the data source. Long rendering points to the dashboard design.
If Performance Recording isn’t enabled on your site, the performance review runs it on your heaviest workbooks and ranks the fixes by time saved. When the cause sits in the warehouse underneath, data engineering consulting takes the work from there.
Inherited Tableau sites are common. The original builders moved on, the documentation is thin, and your team now owns workbooks nobody fully understands.
A rebuild is rarely the first answer. The audit sorts every workbook and data source into three groups: keep as is, fix, or retire. Retiring unused content alone makes the site smaller and easier to run. The data sources you keep get documentation: an owner, a refresh schedule and the calculations that matter.
Try a short test today. Pick your three most important dashboards and trace each headline number back to its source table. Where the trail breaks, the audit picks it up. If there’s no time for the test, read access to the site is all the audit needs to start.
The signal is how much change lies ahead.
A few specialists fit when the site works and you need answers: an audit, a migration plan or a second opinion on Tableau Next. A common path is a fixed-scope audit first, then a fractional Tableau architect on a monthly retainer.
A dedicated team fits when the roadmap is heavy on building, such as new data models, dozens of dashboards or a move from another BI tool. That work runs through BI development, with the same people who wrote the plan.

Switching costs more than licenses. Every workbook, calculation and habit moves too, so a move needs a strong case.
