IEC 63203-101-1 defines vocabulary often used in connection with wearable technology, thus providing an everyday basis for discussing key concepts. IEC 63203-201-3 and IEC 63203-204-1 are standards that provide test methods related to e-textiles.

In particular, the IEC 63203-201-3 standard specifies a test method for determining the electrical resistance of conductive fabrics concerning the temperature and humidity between skin and clothing. The IEC 63203-204-1 standard specifies a test method for measuring the durability of e-textiles for leisure and sports when washed at home.

According to the established Technical Committee, IEC 124 (TC 124), which appeared in March 2017, provided standards in wearable electronic devices and technologies that cover materials and devices that can be inserted, implanted, swallowed, and manufactured from electronic devices and textile materials. In addition, four working groups have been organized to standardize terminology, measurement methods, and evaluation of e-textiles, and all other materials, devices, and systems.

As portable electronic devices and technologies vary in type, form, and purpose, IEC TC 124 has defined them as having common characteristics of continuous operation and data collection to enhance user interaction and benefit the environment.
